Have you seen those digital cameras that have been all over the socials? Influencers and models alike are obsessed with shooting on them and we swear the pics just look better than a regular phone photo (how?)!
But of course when it comes to cameras there’s the whole retro, throwback thing going on too. Because how cool is taking a photo and having no clue what it’s going to come out looking like? Oh, that’s not your speed? No worries, there’s a camera for that.
Basically, what we’re saying is that if you’re after a new camera (that doesn’t come already built into your phones) then we’ve got you sorted. Because the ‘90s and ‘00s are totally back and we’re ready to have your pics in hand as well as on the camera roll.
So, let’s check out the best cameras no matter what you’re after…

Canon PowerShot G7X Mark II Digital Compact Camera
From $999 at Camera House
Okay, so you know how we said the content creators are all using this one specific camera to get THE shot? Well this is it. The Canon G7X has been the go-to for content creators for years and sure it’s had a few improvements along the way. But if you ever watch any ancient YouTube videos, they’re almost definitely filmed on one of these. Oh and yep, we know, it’s seriously exxy. But surely birthday and Christmas combined could add up to one?
Best for: Digital content creation
Key features:
- Totally digital camera
- Social media viral
- The camera influencers use
Available at:

- $999 from Camera Pro
Polaroid Go Generation 2 Instant Camera

OutKast famously sang “shake it like a polaroid picture” which funnily enough, you’re actually not supposed to do (whoops). But with this cute little camera, you are going to feel like dancing, (just be sure to put the photo down first) because not only is seriously tiny, it’s also got an inbuilt selfie mode (unheard of for a polaroid) and is just a totally slay way to take a snap.
Best for: Retro Polaroid vibes
Key features:
- Seriously small polaroid
- Made from 30 per cent recycled materials
- Has a selfie timer mode
Available at:
- $127.46 (usually $149.95) from Myer
- $132.87 from Amazon Australia
- $129 from Kmart
35mm co The Reloader® – Reusable Film Camera
From $119.95 at The Iconic
We don’t think you get just how cool this camera is. It’s literally just like the ones our parents used in the ‘90s! Requiring a certain level of skill to feed in the camera film, and a major patience when it comes to getting the images back (it takes how long?), film cameras have made a major comeback, and it’s such a fun way to relive some of the best memories all of again. And of course laugh when you realise your thumb was over the lens in half the pics (count this as your PSA).
Best for: Taking film photos
Key features:
- Comes in four fun colours
- Reusable ‘disposable’ film fun
- Has a built in flash
Available at:
- $119.95 from The Iconic
- $162.28 from Revolve
Fujifilm Instax LiPlay Camera
From $239 at Myer
So, you’re totally on board with the whole retro throwback aspect of film and polaroid cameras, physically having the photo is so fun. But you’re more of a ‘takes a thousand photos to get the shot’ kind of person. We get it, we really do (you should see our abandoned camera roll). But thankfully you can get the best of both worlds (thanks Miley), with this fun new camera. Designed like a digital camera, it lets you take a bunch of photos and choose your favourite, even adding in filters straight from the camera. And then you can print your pic out of the camera itself. And if that wasn’t cool enough. You can print photos from your phone and even add a QR code to the photo to give it a sound bite. Yep, why choose old school or new school when you can have both?
Best for: The best of both worlds
Key features:
- Hybrid digital and polaroid camera features
- Can even print from your phone
- Able to add ‘sound’ to your photos with a QR code
Available at:
- $178 (usually $239) from Myer
Should you choose a digital or analog camera?
TBH, it’s totally a matter of personal preference. If you’re going to never get your film photos developed, then that’s probably not the way for you. Or if you’re never going to do anything with your digi pics (um, hello new finsta account?), then you’ve got to consider which camera pick fits into your style the most. Or heck, grab one that lets you do everything and call it a day!
